Fair Trade Teaneck Launches Petition Drive
by Clemens Reinke on 06/29/11
Community encouraged to request additional Fair Trade products and retailers
After a month long educational exhibit at the Teaneck Public Library, the Fair Trade Teaneck Steering Committee has launched "1000 Citizens for Fair Trade," an ambitious online petition drive meant to build support for this ethical and globally sensitive commerce throughout Teaneck.
Dennis Klein, Chairman of the Fair Trade Teaneck steering committee said, "With this petition, we are shooting for the moon and expecting the stars. We believe there are many more than 1,000 concerned citizens in Teaneck and the surrounding areas that shop in our stores and patronize our businesses and non-profit organizations that would be more than happy to support the Fair Trade movement by purchasing products that are certified Fair Trade. With Jennifer Glass' help, we know we will succeed and make Teaneck a true shining city on the hill."
The committee's petition coordinator, Jennifer Glass, introduced the drive to those attending the June 2nd opening reception of their multimedia exhibit, "Fair Trade" A Showcase of Teaneck Citizens in Action" and the two related films screened earlier this month, "Black Gold" and "The Dark Side of Chocolate."
The Fair Trade movement is an innovative, market-based system that attempts to ensure fair labor conditions, diminution or elimination of child slave labor practices, a healthy and safe environment, direct access to international markets, sustainable farming practices, economic independence, and higher living standards for producers and farmers in the developing world.

Fair Trade and Valentine's Day
by Clemens Reinke on 02/09/11

On Valentine's Day many people like to surprise their loved one with a gift of chocolate or flowers... a perfect opportunity to share your love not only with the one close to you, but at the same time with those far away. Wouldn't it be great if your gift not only brightens up the day for your loved one, but also the lives of the farmers and their families who produce the chocolate you give, or the flowers you share. Check out the Fair Trade USA website for lots of interesting gift ideas. Happy Valentine's Day!
